About Jheniadah:
Jhenaidah district is the gateway of southern part of Bangladesh. The previous name of the region was “Gangadighi.” The Ganga Dighi (current Baro Bazar) of Kaliganj upazila of the region once had been a famous port of India. It has been mentioned in the Greek history that oysters and muslin were used to be exported from this port in the ancient time. Indigo resistance movements (1860), Peasant Movement, Fakir- Sannayashi Movement etc are the remarkable chapters of the region. At the beginning of the British rule Jhenaidah was a police out- post and was turned into a police station in 1793. The Jhenaidah subdivision was established in 1862 and was turned into a district on 23 February 1984 after the liberation of Bangladesh. The Geo position of the district is between 23˚15’ to 23˚45’ North latitudes and between 88˚45’ to 89˚15’ east longitude.
Bordered By: Jhenaidah District is bordered by Kushtia district to the north, Jessore district and 24 Parganah of West Bengal (Indian State) to the south, Magura and a part of Rajbari district to the east, Chuadangadistrict and 24 Parganah of West Bengal to the west.
Administration: The area of Jhenaidah is 1964.77 Sq Km. It is under Khulna Division. There are 06 Municipalities in Jhenaidah named Jhenaidah, Mohespur, Court-Chandpur, Shyalkupa and Kaligonj. The number of Upazilla (sub district) in Jhenaidah district is 06, named- Jhenaidah Sadar, Mohespur, Court-Chandpur, Harinakunda, Shyalkupa and Kaligonj containing 67 Unions, 882 Mauzas and 1144 Villages.
Population: The total population of Jhenaidah district is 17,71,304 (Male- 886,402 and Female- 884,902), Sex ratio 100:100, Population Density 902/Sq Km and annual growth rate is 1.13%.
Literacy: The Literacy Rate of Jhenaidah district is 48.40% (Male- 50.50% and Female- 48.30%). School attendance rate is 56.40% for 5 to 24 years age group.
Other Important Data: The postal code of Jhenaidah district is 7300 and NWD Code is 0451. Total Parliament seat in Jhenaidah is 04. During the liberation war, Jhenaidah was under Sector Number 08. Urbanization rate of the district is 15.82%. Average temperature of the district is 22.24˚ C. and average rainfall is 152.19 cm. Jhenaidah was liberated on 6 December 1971.

By Road:

By Air:
If you want to go there from Dhaka then you have to go through bus or by plane. If you want to go there by plane then you have to land on Jessore which is just some distance away from Jhenaidah. Then you can make a short trip to reach the place. But if you want to go there by bus then you can make a trip of 5 & half hours to reach the place.

Banyan Tree (Biswabat Bethuli) – The biggest tree in Asia:
The term is that the great tree will give you lots of pleasure when you will be under the stress of sun. The big things that are there in the trees will also make you feel lot better in watching. The extraordinary natural beauty just beside it also a thing to watch. It is mainly in the bank side of a river. The breeze makes the tree even more beautiful to watch.
The fine color is also a thing to watch. During summer, local people arrange a fair under the Banyan tree. The area is so beautiful that this untraditional space is known to people of whole northern region of the country. The large tree attracts all the nature loving persons. I am sure you will enjoy the extreme beauty of it.
Bishwabat (The Great Banyan) is situated at the northwestern side of Bethuli village of Kaliganj upazila of Jhenidah district. It used to be known as Mallikpur (Suitala) banyan tree but people have now started calling it Bishwabat because of its gigantic size.
The original tree gradually generated 45 smaller trees which cover an area of 2.33 hectares. The original tree is now dead. Of its aerial roots, 345 have penetrated the ground and 38 are still hanging. It is said that the tree grew 200-250 years ago on the wall of a local potter's well. It may be mentioned here that the banyan tree of the Calcutta botanical garden covers an area of 2.22 hectares.
How to go:
It is situated in kaligonj Upazilla of this district. A person can go there by rickshaw or other human hauler from Kaliganj main bus stand.
Naldanga Temple Complex:
It is a temple complex in the Kaliganj Upazilla built in 1656 by Maharaj Indranarayan Debroy. There are a total six temples now. The government restored all of them in 1980s but it was destroyed again during the riot. Now most of the temples are in ruins. Renovations are still going on. The idol of goddess Kali was came from Banaras, India.
How to Go:
Buses to Kaliganj are easily available from Jhenaidah or Jessore. Naldanga can be reached by rickshaw from Kaliganj.
Kolika Doha:
It is another remarkable place situated in Naldanga, 300 miter distance from Naldanga Temple Complex.

Baro Bazar:
In a single trip you can see and enjoy many historical place and archeological building at Baro Bazar in Kaliganj UpoZila. These places and archeological sites are: Gazi kalur chompa botir Mazar, Gora Mosjid (Mosque), Sako bazar mosjid and more than 10 other mosjid (mosque) and more than 5 big dighi (pond) are situated in Baro Bazar of Kaligonj Upazilla.



Neel Kithi:
In 1847, construction of a 'Neel Kuthi' at Hat Khalishpur Bazar at in Jhenidah, by the Kapotakkho River was completed. The English indigo planters used this structure as a stronghold and forced the farmers of East Bengal to produce "neel" (indigo). Those who did not comply were tortured. Certain rooms in the now dilapidated Kuthi witnessed the torture. This Kuthi was used as the C.O. office in 1956-'57 and 1983-'84."  It was used as a Union Tafsil Office from 1984 to 2002.There are around 90 fully-grown mango trees around the Kuthi. The Bir Srestha Hamidur Rahman Museum is also in the vicinity.
Shahi Masjid:
Shahi Masjid (Mosque) is situated in Shailkupa. It is about more than 600 years old mosque. It is situated besides the Kali rever on Shailkupa Bazar. Historically it is very significant mosque for the muslims.



The Palace of Salim Chowdhury:
The palace of Salim Chowdhury (called as 'Mia's dalan') at Muralidah in Jhenaidah sadar which is around of 200 years old is also an attaractive place.A person can eaisly go there by rickshaw from jhenaidah sadar.


Galakata Mosque:
Galakata Mosque built in the 16th century A.D. This Galakata Mosque is a typical single dome mosque though entirely built of bricks yet has two stone free -standing pillars of Hindu architectural origin. The mosque was created beautifully. The huge structure of the building makes it important. If you go up there you will see a huge area, because it is almost 150 feet in height. The steps were made by bricks. It looks little different from now a days. But the main wonder things are that how this was created in that time when the technology was not that good. The color of it is mixed with some colors. But white & reds are mostly used. There is a huge area for the people to say their prayer. The amazing part is most of the people of the area say their prayer here. The natural beauty beside the mosque is also great. There is a very big Dighi near this mosque named Galakata Dighi. In the evening various types of birds came here & their singing make us really feel relaxed. Many people come here to relax themselves. There are different types of boats there waiting for you to take into the dighi & show its beauty. It’s really a place to visit. The place is really nice. The open vast nature is one of the most amazing things to see in the world. You can see it from here. In that time you can not only see it but also you can take a bath in that.
K P Bose’s Home
Professor Kalipod bosu, world renowned mathematician, born in his hometown Jhenaidah sadar upozila at Horishongkopur village in 1907. He build a two-storied building with 17 rooms at 1 acre of land on the bank of Nabagangga river. This house is still now habitable and attractive. Every year many visitors come to visit this house. The archeologist and leisure tourist love to visit this site.
How to Go:
It is about 20 km far from Jhenaidah sadar. You can go here by bus or CNG.



Gorar Mosque:
This mosque is situated at Barobazar union Dowlotpur village. This mosque is a symbol of Islamic history and tradition.  There is a pond on the east side of this mosque. There is a concrete pave from mosque to pond. It is a square size mosque with one dome. In 1983, after the excavation by the Department of Archaeology found the center of the dome like a broken foot. The dome looks like a very pleasant and down round the cup. There is a grave beside the mosque. And many people think that this grave would be Gorai Saint. And this mosque is named after this saint. The mosque walls are 5 feet wide. There are three entrance at the east side. There were total four entrance among theme two were at the north and other two were at the south side. Now this entrance has been used as window. There are 3 Mehrab at the west side. At the west side there are 7/8 feet tall two and at the north and south walls of the two has a total of 4 black stone pillars. The entire outer walls of the mosque are decorated stoneware nicely. The mosque is one of the beautiful and unique example of Muslim architecture. This is probably built by Shah Hussain Shah or his son Nasarata Shah.
